Stephen "Steve" M. Phelan, 70, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2024. He was born on June 12, 1953 in Kansas City, Kansas to Augustine and Kathryn (Maskill) Phelan.
Steve grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City Metro area. There were few things he was more ardent about than being a Kansas Citian, and was the first to give his opinions on where to get the best barbeque in town and how he thought the Royals were going to fare this season.
A graduate of Bishop Ward High School in KCK, Steve spent much of his life raising his family in Olathe, KS. He was proud of his professional career that spanned 35 years working as a cable splicer, repair technician, and engineer for AT&T. However, his life’s passion was being a dedicated father to his three sons and a coach/mentor to a myriad of young men in Kansas City. Between the years of 1982 and 2006, he was a constant figurehead as both a coach and leader in Kansas City Metro youth baseball and basketball. From the elementary schoolyard tee ball teams in the 80's all the way through American Legion and semi-pro traveling teams, hundreds upon hundreds of kids in Kansas and Missouri simply knew him as "Coach."
Steve is survived by his sons, Andrew (Colleen) Phelan, Craig (Michelle) Phelan, and Scott (Jentry) Phelan, his six grandchildren (Sam, Jack, Quinn, Jude, Brooke, and Colton), and five brothers and sisters (Kathy, Sue, Pat, John, and Bill).
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of thirty years, Judith A. Phelan.
The family will receive guests for a visitation from 6:00-8:00pm on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Penwell-Gabel's Olathe Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe. Burial will be in Heaven's Gate Catholic Cemetery in Kansas City.
The Endless Game Foundation harnesses the love of baseball and, through charitable donations, works with other charities to improve the local Kansas City community. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Steve’s memory be made to The Endless Game.
Shirts, hats, and shorts are available for sale! Each purchase benefits a charity.
